His father was a legend of Guji during his lifetime, building the region's first wet mill in the early 2000s, whose infrastructure began to be used by small producers of the Bule Hora community. When the Ethiopian government liberalized export regulations in 2018, which practically opened up opportunities for smallholders to sell their coffee outside the country, Tagel founded the Olkai company and, in addition to exporting, also took over the coordination of the Hambela Goro mill.The coffee comes from 460 small producers in the area, from an impressive altitude of approx. 2,300 meters above sea level. They cultivate the local 74110 variety here, and many of them own only a few hundred trees. The organization, standards, and cleanliness at Hambela Goro made a big impression on us, as did the incredibly clean and consistent lots that we had the opportunity to taste fresh while still on site.ABOUT THE COFFEE BEAN PROCESSING ON THE FARMVariety 74110, hand-picked by 460 small producers from around Hambela Goro, depulped, and then fermented in a tank for 48 hours. Washed, dried on raised beds for 12 days.ROASTER'S OPINIONA washed Ethiopian classic in its pure form. There is no point in saying too much here – there is a flower, yellow fruit, it is light, elegant, and complex. A blockbuster product.Store in a cold and dry space.

The factory itself has been operating since 1996, and the cooperative has been a part of Kenyan coffee history since 1951. The coffee comes from approximately 600 smallholders, with the average farm measuring just 0.1 ha. Small scale. Great precision.The crops are situated at an altitude of 1,650–1,700 meters above sea level, near the forest boundary of Mount Kenya. The soils are volcanic, and macadamia trees appear among the shade trees. Tea is also grown in the region, which reflects the climate of the area well: high, green, humid, with excellent conditions for the slow ripening of cherries. The coffee is processed using the washed method, so we expect cleanliness, high acidity, and classic Kenyan juiciness.ROASTER'S OPINIONThis is Kenya in a good, precise style. High acidity, plenty of juiciness, a clean profile, and that exact character you look for in Kirinyaga. Blackcurrant, citrus, tea. Zero randomness. A coffee like this does not need stories about magic. It needs a good recipe.Store in a dry and cool place.

Located in the Central Valley, it has been in the hands of the Guardia family for over a hundred years. When Alberto Guardia took over the farm in the 1970s, he focused on coffee as the main source of income and began a transformation that forever changed its character.A pivotal moment came in 1999 — during the price crisis, Alberto decided to invest in his own mill and alternative processing methods like natural and honey. That’s when Hacienda Sonora became a pioneer of quality in a country historically known almost exclusively for washed processing.Today, the farm is co-managed by Alberto’s son, Diego Guardia, who blends family traditions with a modern approach to quality, experimentation, and selection. Over 80 hectares are dedicated to more than 20 botanical varieties, each treated as a unique project.ABOUT THE COFFEEThis exceptional batch is SL28 — a legendary variety known for its incredible purity and elegance, especially in Kenya, but under Hacienda Sonora’s conditions, it achieves extraordinary clarity and finesse. Grown at an altitude of about 1300 meters above sea level, it offers a cup full of juiciness, delicate structure, and refined sweetness.The natural processing was carried out with great precision: selectively picked cherries are first separated by floatation, then dried whole on black tarps for about 12 days, with full control over airflow and humidity. After the initial drying, the coffee matures, undergoes final drying at low temperatures (up to 35°C), and then rests for two months before being hulled and hand-sorted.In the cup, the coffee is light, juicy, and incredibly clean for a natural – with dominant notes of raspberry and ripe melon, complemented by a delicate, tea-like tannin of black tea. The finish is long, elegant, and sweet, with no heaviness or excessive fermentation. This is a natural in the Hacienda Sonora style: precise, harmonious, and incredibly drinkable.We always roast the coffee fresh, so when it arrives to you, it’s just a few days old.
