We’ve been working with Hellen for three years now, thanks to Nicolas, who exports coffees from Costa Rica. Last year I had the pleasure of driving up the most winding and bumpy road to the top of a mountain where Hellen’s house and farm are located. We got there in a car Nico had borrowed from his mom, because his had broken down the day before. At some point his mom’s little SUV simply couldn’t make it any further, so Hellen drove down in her big pickup truck and towed us the rest of the way up.First she fed us, then she showed us the farm and told us its story. After the walk she prepared a cupping where she presented eight of her coffees. A cupping in the kitchen while rice and beans are cooking right next to you? Why not.The coffees were phenomenal. And that Geisha? That’s the coffee that’s been appearing in my dreams ever since I came back from Costa Rica. Lots of tropical fruit, but without the kind of fermentation often associated with coffees from this country. Notes of banana and pineapple, plenty of red, sweet wine, currants, and everything beautifully structured and right where it should be.I’m very happy that we’re also presenting such an exceptional coffee as an espresso. It’s the essence of that trip in a cup: sweetness, tropical fruit, bright acidity supported by deep sweetness. One of the warmest memories from that journey returns every time we roast and brew this coffee. I invite you to join me on this trip.

This doesn't mean they are "small," but rather that they grow coffee on small plots of land (usually less than 2 hectares) and do not process it themselves. The harvested coffee cherries are sent to cooperatives that handle further processing at local washing stations. This is where the cherries are turned into "washed coffee."In this case, the coffee cherries are collected by the Inoi Farmers Cooperative Society, and their processing takes place at the Kaguyu factory, managed by Wilson Wanjohi. The coffee is processed using the washed method. Once delivered, the cherries are pulped to extract the seeds, fermented overnight, then washed, soaked, and dried on raised tables. The mineral-rich, red volcanic soil and the varieties used (SL-34, Ruiru 11, SL-28, Batian) give it a distinctive flavor profile: intense sweetness, high acidity, and blueberry notes.Historical Fact: Coffee arrived in Kenya only at the end of the 19th century, during the colonial era when the British began establishing plantations. Interestingly, for a long time, local farmers were not allowed to grow coffee legally. It wasn't until the 1930s that they were permitted to produce it for themselves, which today forms the foundation of Kenya's specialty coffee scene and remains a major contribution to the country's budget.

Much like in Kenya, the volcanic soil here is extremely rich in minerals and nutrients, which translates directly into a complex and sweet cup profile. Bourbon is produced here by nearly 500 smallholder farmers living around the washing station. Nearby lies Nyungwe National Park, known for its pristine forests and a significant protected population of gorillas. The water used during processing comes from a natural spring.Cyiya supports its local community in several ways, including providing training for producers and distributing coffee seedlings and shade trees free of charge. At the same time, it promotes environmental protection through conservation programs and wastewater treatment initiatives.ABOUT THE COFFEE PROCESSING AT THE FARMThe Bourbon variety is hand-picked and undergoes an initial selection before being delivered to the mill. The next stage involves soaking the cherries in water to separate the under-ripe ones, which float to the surface instead of sinking. After the beans are separated from the fruit, they undergo fermentation in tanks for 18 hours, followed by washing and drying on raised beds for approximately two weeks.ROASTER'S OPINIONEvery year we get excited about fresh Rwandan coffees and pack these beautiful beans into jars. It’s like a lemonade-style, fruity compote where all the layers come together in such perfect synergy that we end up gulping it down by the liters.

They are constantly improving processes, planting new varieties, and taking care of what they already have. La Soledad and El Lano are coffee farms (the latter also managed by Raul), but also brands trusted by large roasters worldwide, businesses that were already active when we used to call bread "bep." This washed coffee from the H1 variety is magnificent. H1 carries the gene of the African variety Sudan Rume, which, under the right conditions, can reveal citrusy and floral notes. It’s all incredibly juicy, sweet, and crystal clear. We bought the beans from our friend Ben, who sent me a photo report from Ethiopia a few days ago. He’s currently at the farm and will be spending the next few months there, helping with the harvest and processing. Ah… it’s a wonderful coffee, and while sipping it I can already feel that spring is just around the corner.

The plantation belongs to the Los Naranjos group, led by Sigfredo Corado, a retired agronomy professor from the National School of Agriculture. It is also part of the Renacer Program – a field school for coffee producers in the region, aimed at imparting knowledge on better crop management practices.Sigfredo, together with a team of six technicians, runs the field school. The program supports small and medium-sized producers from the area, offering training on best agricultural practices that promote soil and land regeneration while improving yields and coffee quality. The school operates at Finca Noruega, where classes are held twice a month. The curriculum focuses on a soil health program based on the principles of "right source, right dose, right place, and right time."Since 2021, the program has involved 60 participants who work on experimental plots. Here, they can apply the knowledge they gain during lessons before implementing it on their own farms.ABOUT THE PROCESSINGThe Pacamara variety, hand-picked, dried in the whole fruit on raised tables for about 25-30 days.ROASTER'S OPINIONOne of our favorite botanical varieties, produced in an excellent way by Mr. Sigfredo, who knows what’s what.
