ABOUT THE COFFEE

They are already here! Just as the warm weather has settled in for good, the first fresh harvests from Africa are starting to arrive. Itumpi from Tanzania clearly reminds us why we value coffees from this part of the continent: crisp, juicy brews with a large dose of freshness.

In taste, Itumpi leans towards green-red rhubarb and pink grapefruit. The acidity is distinct and pleasantly juicy. In mouthfeel, the coffee is light, tea-like, and clean, with a crisp finish that practically begs to be brewed over ice.

The enigmatic PB stands for peaberry. It refers to a natural anomaly where, instead of two flat beans, a single, smaller, and rounder bean develops inside the coffee cherry. Sometimes overlooked, though completely unfairly, because it can yield a very intense, concentrated flavor. It was this intensity that stole our taste buds from among the other grades.

The raw material comes from the Itumpi cooperative in the Mbozi district, Songwe region. About 160 local producers operate here, cultivating coffee at an altitude of 1500–1700 meters above sea level. Since 2019, the cooperative has been producing fully washed coffees using their own wet mill. With such a crisp, acidic profile, this method fits like a glove.
