It is a hilly region with an average altitude of 1,500-1,800 meters above sea level, rich in volcanic soils. The Nyagishiru station is owned and managed by Matsitsi Trading Coffee SU (MATRACO). The company was founded in 2015 by Zuberi Matsitsi, who produces specialty coffee primarily for international markets.Fun fact: Zuberi Matsitsi owns over 7,000 coffee trees. In addition to the Nyagishiru CWS plantation, his company also owns two other plantations in the Kayanza province. Bette Buna is committed to improving the quality of life for its community members – it teaches local farmers how to improve soil quality, restore agroforestry systems, and understand the importance of harvesting ripe cherries. Ripe cherries weigh more and yield better coffee, so farmers receive higher pay per kilogram, as well as a quality premium. The company also distributes over 350,000 seedlings from its own nursery every year.Fun fact: The coffee underwent a decaffeination process at the Coffein Compagnie using a solution of water and ethyl acetate, which occurs naturally in sugar cane, coffee, and fruits. The caffeine is then removed from the solution using activated carbon. The caffeine-free solution is subsequently added back to the pre-dried coffee beans.
