The plantation belongs to the Los Naranjos group, led by Sigfredo Corado, a retired agronomy professor from the National School of Agriculture. It is also part of the Renacer Program – a field school for coffee producers in the region, aimed at imparting knowledge on better crop management practices.Sigfredo, together with a team of six technicians, runs the field school. The program supports small and medium-sized producers from the area, offering training on best agricultural practices that promote soil and land regeneration while improving yields and coffee quality. The school operates at Finca Noruega, where classes are held twice a month. The curriculum focuses on a soil health program based on the principles of "right source, right dose, right place, and right time."Since 2021, the program has involved 60 participants who work on experimental plots. Here, they can apply the knowledge they gain during lessons before implementing it on their own farms.ABOUT THE PROCESSINGThe Pacamara variety, hand-picked, dried in the whole fruit on raised tables for about 25-30 days.ROASTER'S OPINIONOne of our favorite botanical varieties, produced in an excellent way by Mr. Sigfredo, who knows what’s what. Depulping, washing, a moment of fermentation in the tank and drying in the ideal conditions of the Marcal region.THE FARMCatuai from El Puente is a grain-archetype. A clean, sweet, simple caramel brew with notes of red fruit and a citrus stamp in the background. From a legend among producers, the world-famous Marysabel Caballero. This one doesn't even need a special introduction! It is impossible to go wrong here.ROASTER'S COMMENTIt is impossible to drink the same blend twice. Heraclitus knew this, and we believe the guy. However, he had no way of grasping the fact that life is like the helium-6 isotope - a wildly unstable joke of the universe. We know that, and that's how Elixir came to be! Insanely unstable, always sweet. Every time different, every time fruity as hell. We dump the best coffees in it, because who can say no? Take a sip of Elixir and feel like... whatever you want!PACKAGINGThe coffee is packed in a brown jar made of PET, 100% recyclable or reusable. In case you're thinking "oh no, plastic!", bear in mind that standard coffee packaging is also made of plastic (and a few other materials, making it often harder to recycle). We also thought about glass, but it's heavier, more expensive, breakable and, wait for it, has the same or greater (sic!) environmental impact! A plastic jar turns out to be pretty eco-friendly, just remember to put it in the right container, or find a creative way to reuse it at home.

It is one of the few areas in the region that is home to protected forests, which host a diverse range of flora and fauna typical of the area. Moreover, there are several water sources in the region that supply much of the nearby city. The lush, natural ecosystem creates excellent conditions for growing coffee trees while also contributing to the fertility and stability of the soil in these lands.This particular lot is a blend of two botanical varieties from several small producers, who cultivate and process coffee on small, multi-hectare plantations.ABOUT COFFEE PROCESSING ON THE FARMThe Caturra and Pache varieties are hand-picked and processed at small, producer-owned stations. The beans are separated from the cherries using small, often manual depulpers and then fermented in tanks for about 36 hours. After washing, the beans are dried in specially built wooden structures, covered with tarps to ensure a more controlled process, without direct sunlight exposure.ROASTER'S OPINIONI first roasted El Diamante around 2016, alongside several other washed microlots from the highlands of this northern part of the country. And I was hooked. A beautifully clean and elegant cup, full of clear notes, distinct fruitiness, and mature, juicy acidity.

Much like in Kenya, the volcanic soil here is extremely rich in minerals and nutrients, which translates directly into a complex and sweet cup profile. Bourbon is produced here by nearly 500 smallholder farmers living around the washing station. Nearby lies Nyungwe National Park, known for its pristine forests and a significant protected population of gorillas. The water used during processing comes from a natural spring.Cyiya supports its local community in several ways, including providing training for producers and distributing coffee seedlings and shade trees free of charge. At the same time, it promotes environmental protection through conservation programs and wastewater treatment initiatives.ABOUT THE COFFEE PROCESSING AT THE FARMThe Bourbon variety is hand-picked and undergoes an initial selection before being delivered to the mill. The next stage involves soaking the cherries in water to separate the under-ripe ones, which float to the surface instead of sinking. After the beans are separated from the fruit, they undergo fermentation in tanks for 18 hours, followed by washing and drying on raised beds for approximately two weeks.ROASTER'S OPINIONEvery year we get excited about fresh Rwandan coffees and pack these beautiful beans into jars. It’s like a lemonade-style, fruity compote where all the layers come together in such perfect synergy that we end up gulping it down by the liters.
