ABOUT THE FARM
Gihere Central Processing Station accepts coffee from over 1,600 smallholder farmers in the Ngozi region of Burundi. The average farmer in this region owns only about 250 trees, from which ripe cherries are picked by hand. The station was established in 1984, and its creation allowed many farmers access to capital investment, education, and infrastructure, enabling them to produce top-quality coffee and improve their living conditions.
Fun fact: The station features suitable tanks for sorting and fermenting coffee to ensure optimal processing, as well as over 200 drying beds. This allows for the processing of nearly 20,000 bags of coffee beans in total. After drying, the coffee is transported to the country's capital (Gitega), where it is sorted prior to export.
