The farm covers 6 hectares, 5 of which are dedicated to coffee cultivation, and the trees in this lot are around four years old.The farm is managed by Vladimir and his family, and the entire process, from harvesting to drying, takes place on-site and under their direct supervision. The harvest season runs from April to December and is based on selective hand-picking to maintain consistent quality and uniformity of the cherries.ABOUT THE COFFEEGesha is a variety strongly associated with exceptional quality and a very high sensory potential when grown at high altitudes. It is also a low-yield variety, which means that even with high demand, it remains genuinely limited on the market. For years it has consistently won the most prestigious coffee competitions and achieved record-breaking results at international auctions.This lot is processed using a washed method with extended, controlled fermentation. The harvest is done manually and selectively, in cycles roughly every 20 days, using only fully ripe cherries.After harvesting, the cherries ferment in bags for about 12 hours. They are then transferred to a hopper, where the initial oxidation stage is completed. The coffee then undergoes flotation, followed by depulping and an extended fermentation of approximately 200 hours in tanks or vats.After fermentation, the coffee is washed using either a portable washing unit or an Ecomill system. It is then dried on raised beds for 15–17 days and stabilized in GrainPro bags for 10–15 days. The final step is careful sorting to remove defects and ensure the highest physical quality of the beans.BREW RECIPERatio: 60 g of coffee per 1 liter of waterWater temperature: 93°CGrind size: medium-coarsePour the water in five equal pours (for example 5 × 60 g), every 30 seconds.Allow the water to fully drain through the coffee between each pour.If the water flows too slowly or too quickly, adjust the grind size accordingly (coarser or finer).Use soft, filtered water for the best results.

This doesn't mean they are "small," but rather that they grow coffee on small plots of land (usually less than 2 hectares) and do not process it themselves. The harvested coffee cherries are sent to cooperatives that handle further processing at local washing stations. This is where the cherries are turned into "washed coffee."In this case, the coffee cherries are collected by the Inoi Farmers Cooperative Society, and their processing takes place at the Kaguyu factory, managed by Wilson Wanjohi. The coffee is processed using the washed method. Once delivered, the cherries are pulped to extract the seeds, fermented overnight, then washed, soaked, and dried on raised tables. The mineral-rich, red volcanic soil and the varieties used (SL-34, Ruiru 11, SL-28, Batian) give it a distinctive flavor profile: intense sweetness, high acidity, and blueberry notes.Historical Fact: Coffee arrived in Kenya only at the end of the 19th century, during the colonial era when the British began establishing plantations. Interestingly, for a long time, local farmers were not allowed to grow coffee legally. It wasn't until the 1930s that they were permitted to produce it for themselves, which today forms the foundation of Kenya's specialty coffee scene and remains a major contribution to the country's budget.

The first single varieties Marvin experimented with were Caturra and Millennium.The mill, named “Reina Elizabeth,” pays tribute to the farm’s previous owner, Elisa Alfaro Hidalgo (1928–2016), who was Marvin’s mother. Doña Elisa had strikingly blue eyes, which led locals in San Luis to claim that only a queen could have such eyes—hence the nickname “Reina Elizabeth.” In addition to her remarkable eyes, her kindness and the farm’s specialty coffee were also truly royal.

Wine yeast efficiently converts sugars into alcohol and aromatic compounds, helping break down the mucilage and release more organic acids as well as compounds responsible for the depth and intensity of the flavor profile.After 72 hours of anaerobic fermentation with the fruit pulp, the cherries are depulped. The skin is removed, but the sticky “honey” layer remains on the bean, giving the coffee natural sweetness and a fuller body.The beans are then moved to concrete patios, where they are dried in thin layers and regularly turned to ensure even drying and to prevent over-fermentation or mold. The drying process continues until the ideal moisture content of 9.5–11% is reached. The result in the cup is an intensely aromatic, juicy coffee with clear floral and lychee notes, hints of grapes, a delicate fermenty sparkle, and a long nectar-like finish.ROASTER’S NOTECan’t beat them? Join them. For some people this co-ferment is a revelation, a grimace, a guilty pleasure, a self-gift, an unreasonable financial decision, and for the less refined, simply a reason to hate.
