Fredy Orantes is a true leader among the coffee growers in the town of Santa Rosa, and has worked tirelessly to maintain high standards in the field and during the harvest in order to produce the best possible coffees. Fredy is an expert with both larger lots and small microlots, and every aspect of coffee picking and processing is done with care in order to ensure top quality. Fredy is always thinking about sustainability on the farm. He actively cares for the variety of trees on the farm - grevillea and cuje are the most numerous but he also maintains other types of fruit trees and native trees. The soil is carefully maintained, and soil management includes the application of organic materials that have been composted such as fallen leaves and branches as well as coffee pulp. A variety of native animals and birds appear on the farm, and Fredy explains that the farm is not even fenced in; as in nature these creatures can come and go as they please. Fredy loves experimenting with different varieties and processes, and this lot is the perfect example of his efforts. He added about 1 hectare of Pacamara plants to his farm in 2019, and they have begun producing the large, red fruit for this lot.THE PROCESSAfter a very careful picking, with workers choosing only the ripest cherries, the coffee is placed into clean sacks for a fermentation of about 48 hours. When this fermentation period is over, Fredy adds the coffee to his raised beds, positioned to take advantage of the abundant sunlight of Fraijanes. The coffee dries on these beds for 22 days, with frequent turning to encourage thorough and consistent drying.

This is where the fruit is depulped, fermented, and dried. The coffee cherries processed at Bulambuli are sourced from 200–400 local farmers. The high altitude of the area favors the production of high-quality coffees. The processing at Bulambuli is carried out by specialized staff who ensure precise and controlled conditions throughout the entire process.The region primarily grows the SL14, SL28, and SL34 varieties, which are also characteristic of Kenya. The cherries come from small family farms with an area of less than 1 hectare. These farms are located in parishes—local administrative communities consisting of 7 to 12 villages, often with as few as 200 inhabitants. Farmers typically work in groups led by a designated leader.The harvest of East Ugandan coffee takes place from August to January. In lower-lying areas, the season falls between August and October, while at higher altitudes, it lasts from September to January. Farmers sell their cherries at small collection points or deliver them directly to the washing station. There, the fruit is sorted and then—depending on the method—sent for depulping (washed process) or to the drying yard in Mbale (natural process).ROASTER'S OPINIONSurprisingly sweet, with notes of chocolate and almond, complemented by a light hint of forest and stone fruits. A lot prepared entirely by women, from the moment the cherries are harvested all the way through to the final stages of processing.The name refers to the Rwandan tradition of Urugori, a symbolic crown given to a woman after the birth of her first child as a sign of recognition for her role within the family and the community. In the case of this coffee, it also serves to highlight the role women play across the entire coffee value chain.In the cup, this year’s harvest is defined above all by sweetness. The profile is fruity, though closer to dark and dried fruits. Notes of plum appear first, followed by dried apricot and raisins. To round out this wave of sweetness, the whole profile feels as if the fruits had been drizzled with buckwheat honey. Sweet, dense and deeply satisfying.This lot was produced within a transparent pricing model, where additional value goes directly to the women involved in its production.
