ABOUT THE COFFEE AND THE FARM

Githiga in the town of Kangema is one of two coffee processing facilities operated by the Kanyenaini Farmers Cooperative Society, an agricultural cooperative established in 1953 in Murang’a County. The washing station is located on the slopes of Mount Kenya near the town of Kangema, and the coffee cherries harvested by 980 farmers who are members of the cooperative are processed here.

Fun fact: Like many other Kenyan coffees, coffees from the Githiga station undergo a double washing process. After the ripe cherries are separated from defective, unripe, and overripe ones, they are wet-processed using clean water from the Githiga stream.
