This pu-erh is made from gushu, or ancient trees that are at least a century old. The age of the tree has a profound effect on the tea; as the years pass, the leaves gain character, and the tree's roots reach farther back, drawing more minerality from the earth. In this case, the rocky aromas are also accompanied by a hint of black pepper.
