In the case of this coffee, it also serves to highlight the role women play across the entire coffee value chain.In the cup, this year’s harvest is defined above all by sweetness. The profile is fruity, though closer to dark and dried fruits. Notes of plum appear first, followed by dried apricot and raisins. To round out this wave of sweetness, the whole profile feels as if the fruits had been drizzled with buckwheat honey. In practice, this means one thing: the raw material is predictable, clean, and produced to meet the highest standards.This is a deliberate combination of two varieties. Tabi brings structure and elegance, often expressed as a more tea-like clarity and a stable, citrus-fruit acidity, while Yellow Colombia adds sweetness and juicy, ripe fruit character.Formally, this is a washed coffee, but processed in a way that strongly shapes the flavor profile. First, the fermentation is two-stage: an initial aerobic phase, followed by anaerobic submersion, designed to emphasize stone fruit notes (peach, apricot) rather than heavy, wine-like flavors. Second, after fermentation the coffee undergoes controlled hot/cold quenching, meaning contact with hot and cold water to stop the process at the right moment and preserve aromatic clarity. This is where the fruit is depulped, fermented, and dried. The coffee cherries processed at Bulambuli are sourced from 200–400 local farmers. The high altitude of the area favors the production of high-quality coffees. The processing at Bulambuli is carried out by specialized staff who ensure precise and controlled conditions throughout the entire process.The region primarily grows the SL14, SL28, and SL34 varieties, which are also characteristic of Kenya. The cherries come from small family farms with an area of less than 1 hectare. These farms are located in parishes—local administrative communities consisting of 7 to 12 villages, often with as few as 200 inhabitants. Farmers typically work in groups led by a designated leader.The harvest of East Ugandan coffee takes place from August to January. In lower-lying areas, the season falls between August and October, while at higher altitudes, it lasts from September to January. Whole-cherry fermentation combined with controlled drying resulted in an unusual profile that is softer than classic washed Kenyan coffees.In the cup, you’ll find notes of nectarine, blackberry, and tea, with a subtle chocolate accent in the background. The acidity is medium and well-balanced, and the overall profile is very clean and cohesive for a natural process.This coffee shows a different side of Kenya: less aggressive, more juicy and calm, yet still full of character.
