The Poda Women’s Group is led by Samuel Sihombing, a former pastor who became a community leader and coffee visionary in Sidikalang. The group sources coffee exclusively from the Dairi region, from three districts: Sitinjo, Sumbul, and Sidikalang. Farms are small, and most coffee plots cover less than one hectare. The group was founded with the involvement of women farmers, who also engage other local women—for example, in coffee sorting.
Fun fact: Poda uses a radically different approach to supplier relations compared to common models in the coffee industry—working directly with farmers, organizing them into groups, and providing a platform for agronomic training to improve coffee quality. These groups often rely on local savings and loan cooperatives, which give farmers greater financial autonomy and help break the cycle of debt to intermediaries.
