Banko Chelbesa is located in the Gedeb woreda in southern Ethiopia and forms part of the Yirgacheffe area known for coffee cultivation. Chelbesa is considered the largest coffee production area in Gedeb, where coffee is cultivated on an area of approximately 1,240 ha. It is mainly managed by multi-generational families of smallholder farmers, usually on small garden plots, often less than one hectare in size. Coffee trees often surround household properties, reflecting the importance of this crop as the main source of income.
Fun fact: within the community, coffee plays a key role in daily life and in shaping local identity.
