ABOUT THE COFFEE

Chelbesa is a delicate, tea-like coffee from Ethiopia with a clean taste. It stands out with notes of juicy peach and the aroma of Earl Grey tea, while maintaining balance and being very pleasant to drink. This lot comes from Banko Chelbesa in the Gedeb woreda, located in the Gedeo Zone of southern Ethiopia – part of the broader Yirgacheffe coffee-growing region, at an altitude of 2000–2300 meters above sea level. Coffee here is cultivated by multi-generational families of smallholders on small garden plots, often intercropped with enset, avocado, and papaya. The high altitude and iron-rich, acidic soils of the region contribute to the bright, floral character for which classic Yirgacheffe coffee is famous. For this washed-process lot, ripe cherries are depulped on the day of harvest, fermented in clean tanks to remove mucilage, and then thoroughly washed and sun-dried on raised beds.

ROASTER'S OPINION

Chelbesa is a classic Ethiopian washed coffee, characterized by a delicate, aromatic, and very accessible flavor profile. Peach and Earl Grey give the brew a juicy, tea-like character, while caramel adds warmth and a smooth, long-lasting finish. The brew is clean, balanced, and easy to read, yet complex enough to maintain its appeal. It is distinct, yet calm and drinkable – a great everyday Ethiopia.
