ABOUT THE FARM

Hernando Machaca is the owner of the Finca Machaca coffee plantation, located in the municipality of Chojñapampa in the department of La Paz. The region is famous for its lush landscapes and favorable conditions for coffee cultivation. Despite the challenges faced by small producers in Bolivia, such as access to a market dominated by larger buyers, Hernando maintains high quality standards in his production, supports the local community by preserving traditional farming methods, and promotes economic development in the spirit of sustainable practices.

Fun fact: Coffee was likely introduced to Bolivia by enslaved people from Africa. The first mentions date back to the 18th century and refer to estates in the Yungas region, where it was cultivated and consumed by landowners. Coffee cultivation expanded on the largest scale in the 1970s and 1980s due to a national plan to diversify crops and avoid complete dependence on coca crops.
