ABOUT THE COFFEE
Located in Kirinyaga County, the Rung’eto Cooperative is one of the more renowned specialty coffee producers in Kenya. And this fame is well-deserved, as year after year, beans from this cooperative rank among the finest Kenyan coffees.Coffee first appeared in the Rungeto area in the 1950s. As life goes, growers experienced ups and downs, including the rise of the massive Ngariama cooperative and its ultimate collapse.
In 1997, 1,150 members of the now-defunct Ngariama cooperative came together to form the Rungeto Cooperative Society and soon reopened three wet mills: Kii (built in 1965), Karimikui (1968), and Kiangoi (1995). Farmers who are members of the cooperative deliver coffee to the mills to process it in sweet water from the Kii River.
Thanks to good management, the cooperative has sustained itself, and its membership continues to grow – currently counting 7,800 smallholder farmers who cultivate rich, clay soil at altitudes between 1,600 and 1,800 meters above sea level. Thanks to rigorous cherry selection and the famous Kenyan double fermentation, beans from Rung’eto are clean and intense in flavor.
ROASTER'S OPINION
Here is the queen among Kenyan coffees. This is already our fourth season with these beans, and it certainly will not be the last. If you like true Kenya in your Kenyan coffee, you will definitely find it here.
