ABOUT THE COFFEE

The Gathiru-ini station belongs to the Komothai Farmers Cooperative Society in Githunguri, Kiambu County. Around 700 members cultivate a total of 168 hectares of coffee at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level, in red volcanic soils rich in organic matter. On average, there are 300 trees per farmer—these are small, family farms, not corporate plantations. The lot consists mainly of SL34, SL28, and Ruiru 11 varieties. The processing is classic Kenyan washed: ripe cherries gathered in the morning are sorted on the patio, depulped, and submerged in water channels. Fermentation takes place overnight, followed by washing and drying on raised beds for about two weeks. Nothing complicated—quality comes from the raw material and precision. And here, both are present.

ROASTER'S OPINION

Gathiru-ini is an uncompromised washed Kenya. Grapefruit and rhubarb put acidity front and center right away, while blackcurrants add complexity, creating a solid foundation. A clear and very direct coffee in what it offers. It doesn't reinvent the wheel. It simply delivers what it should.
