ABOUT THE FARM
The Gihere station receives coffee cherries from over 1,600 smallholder farmers in the Ngozi region. The average farm here has about 250 coffee trees, and ripe cherries are harvested by hand. The station has been operating since 1984. Sorting equipment and over 200 drying beds help local farmers process their coffee and improve crop quality. After drying, the beans are taken to Gitega, where they are prepared for export. In natural processing, whole, ripe cherries dry on raised beds. The drying time depends on the weather.
