ABOUT THE COFFEE
For years, Kayanza Province has been considered one of the most important coffee-growing regions in Burundi—home to some of the country’s most acclaimed beans. Coffee trees grow within a mosaic of crops: tea bushes, banana plants, beans, and cassava, cultivated on plots run mainly by women farmers. The cherries they harvest are delivered to an exceptional washing station that uses a rare double-fermentation process in Burundi. This method brings out a clean, precise cup full of subtle nuance and clarity.
The importer behind Matongo coffees has been working closely with the local community for many years. Through long-term cooperation, regular visits, and a partnership-based approach, every lot is carefully monitored at each stage of production. This sustained commitment ensures not only high quality, but also reliability and stability of supply from this small yet remarkable corner of Burundi.
