Also known as Manila hemp, the plant is economically important for its strong fibers extracted from the leaf stalks. It grows up to 4–7 meters tall. Originally used for making ropes and twines, most Abaca today is pulped and used in specialty paper products such as tea bags, coffee filters, and banknotes. It is classified as a hard fiber.Abaca can be harvested three years after planting and then every 3 to 8 months. Harvesting leaves the root intact, allowing new plants to grow. It is one of the strongest natural fibers, highly resistant to sunlight, moisture, microorganisms, and seawater.
