ABOUT THE FARM
The New Gikaru Farmers Cooperative Society operates in the Nyeri region, between the Aberdare Range and the slopes of Mount Kenya. The cooperative was founded in 2001 and today brings together several thousand small-scale coffee producers who cultivate their trees on small family farms. It has been Fairtrade certified since 2011 and consistently invests in improving coffee quality and the living conditions of its members.
The operational model of New Gikaru is typical for the best Kenyan cooperatives. Farmers deliver cherries to local washing stations, and the cooperative itself is responsible for financing, quality control, and coffee sales. This system allows even small farms to benefit from professional infrastructure and achieve the quality that Kenyan specialty coffee is famous for. New Gikaru includes several washing stations, including Ichamara, Mutwewathi, Kahuro, Kiuu, and Thangathi.Members of the cooperative primarily cultivate SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru 11 varieties at an altitude of 1400–1600 m a.s.l., on fertile red volcanic soils.
In addition to coffee production, New Gikaru conducts training for farmers, supports women and young producers, and invests in infrastructure, such as solar dryers and modern drying beds. Thanks to this, it has for years belonged to the group of the most valued specialty coffee producers from the Nyeri region.
