It was established in 2008, but initially operated irregularly. The breakthrough came in 2017 when Rwanda Trading Company (RTC) took over management. Since then, Kirambo has become one of the leading specialty coffee processing centers in the region, regularly delivering highly rated and award-winning lots of beans.The coffee comes from small, family-owned farms that manage small plots of land. For this reason, processing stations were created in the region – they collect cherries from many local suppliers, sort them by quality, and process them using professional equipment, which would be unattainable for individual farmers. Rwanda Trading Company, which manages the washing station, actively supports smallholder producers by offering them agricultural training, crop renovation programs, and financial support. These actions translate into a steady increase in coffee quality, integration of the local community, and improved living conditions for farmers.The coffee cherries are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous selection, and are then processed using the natural (dry) method. The beans dry for 15–22 days on special raised beds, under continuous control of humidity levels. The coffee is decaffeinated using the sugarcane ethyl acetate method – not chemically, but using a natural solvent derived from sugarcane. The green beans enter a steam chamber, are then soaked in spring water, and spend 8 hours in direct contact with ethyl acetate, which dissolves the caffeine while leaving the rest untouched.
