ABOUT THE COFFEE

West Arsi is a relatively recently recognized coffee-growing region. Beans from this area were previously sold under the broader category of Sidamo. And you know what? It’s great that West Arsi has gained its independence, because coffees from there are exceptional and deserve to be treated as such.

Where does this uniqueness come from? High elevation, 2,000 meters above sea level and higher. Volcanic soils. A substantial amount of rainfall. And finally, smallholder farmers who grow just a few coffee trees near their homes, often local heirloom varieties. All of this together creates the coffee’s distinctive character and high quality.

The coffee comes from 500 farmers living around the village of Refisa, in the Nensebo woreda (roughly equivalent to a municipality). The washing station is owned by a local legend, Negusse Debela.
