When our importer sent me the samples, he described this coffee as scoring 89 points. I said, “Come on, that’s a bit much.” We cupped it — and I have to admit, it’s a solid 87, maybe even 88. Totally agree.
The farm is run by Willy, a young guy we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. We’ve already had other coffees from his farm at HAYB — those previous lots were called Mahembe. Willy also runs a washing station, which means he doesn’t have to transport his cherries elsewhere. Thanks to that, he has full control over the entire process — from harvest all the way to shipping the coffee to us.
Why did I say this coffee deserves a solid 87 points? Everything is perfectly in place. The flavor is complex, reminiscent of blueberries or wild berries (honestly, for me, it tastes more like blueberries than many co-fermented coffees). The brew is juicy yet sweet — like a Kordia cherry.
