COFFEE
The cherries are all processed at the Heza Washing Station in Kayanza, grown by smalholder farmers on the surrounding hills of Gishubi, Mikuba, Mutana, and Nkonge. Some lots were processed as washed, others as natural - all handled with the same meticulous care that Long Miles Coffee is known for. Naturally processed cherries were dried slowly on shaded mesh beds for up to 40 days to reach exactly 10,5% moisture. This patient approach preserves clarity and sweetness, resulting in a remarkably clean and expressive profile, whether washed or natural.
Each of the contributing hills has its own distinct character. Mist from the nearby Kibira Forest cools the coffee trees on Gishubi and Mutana, slowing cherry maturation and adding complexity. On Nkonge, natural springs and high altitudes create dense, flavour-rich beans, while Mikuba is blanketed in wildflowers and food crops, with farmers walking anywhere from a few metres to several kilometres to deliver cherries to Heza. This unique mix of terroirs gives the coffee a layered and vibrant character. Heza means ‘beautiful place’ in Kirundi, the local language of Burundi. With panoramic views and an ever-changing East African sky, this washing station lives up to its name.
PRODUCER
Johan & Nyström have been working with Long Miles Coffee since 2014, building a close partnership rooted in shared values and quality. The founders of Long Miles, Ben & Kristy Carlson, moved to Burundi in 2011 and saw both injustices and poor agricultural practices that dominated the country's coffee industry. They also saw that roasteries around the world had a hard time getting consistently good coffee from Burundi. As an initiative for positive change for both farmers and coffee roasters, the Long Miles Coffee Project was born.
