Amber Heart is a fermented shu pu-erh tea (ripe), where the typical earthiness is complemented by an unusual sweetness. The infusion is smooth and warming, with notes of wood and warming spices. Unlike “raw” sheng pu-erh, shu pu-erh is free of bitterness and gentle on the stomach.
We named it Amber Heart because of the dark golden color of the infusion and the unusual shape of the leaves: small nuggets formed like hearts. This type of tea is known in China as Lao Cha Tou.
During the production of shu pu-erh, the leaves are piled into heaps and sprayed with water to provide additional moisture that accelerates fermentation. Lao Cha Tou comes from the very bottom of these piles, where fermentation takes place in the highest humidity. The most intense flavors and sugars from the entire batch collect there, making these nuggets noticeably sweeter than typical shu pu-erh.
